Values are amps at a 30 °C ambient, before derating for temperature or conductor bundling. Most installations must use the 75 °C column regardless of the wire's own rating, because terminals and breakers are rated 75 °C (NEC 110.14(C)).
How far can you run 4/0 AWG at 230 A?
Ampacity answers whether a conductor will overheat. It says nothing about whether the voltage still arrives at the far end. The 0000 gauge mistake worth knowing
4/0 is written “four-aught” and is the THICKEST size in this chart, not the thinnest — the aught sizes run backwards from 1/0 up to 4/0. Searching “4 0 wire” almost always means this size rather than 4 AWG, and the two are not close: 4/0 has roughly five times the cross-section and nearly three times the ampacity.
