8 AWG copper — at 75 °C terminals, NEC Table 310.16. Aluminum: 6 AWG.
A 50 A circuit needs 8 AWG copper, rated 50 A at 75 °C. If the run is NM-B (Romex), NEC 334.80 forces the 60 °C column and the answer becomes 6 AWG.

Sizes are the smallest conductor whose ampacity and NEC 240.4(D) breaker cap both reach 50 A, before any derating. Use the 75 °C column unless every terminal, breaker and device in the circuit is rated otherwise (NEC 110.14(C)).
If the load runs continuously
A load operating for three hours or more is a continuous load, and NEC 210.19(A)(1) requires the conductor to be sized at 125% of it — 50 A becomes 62.5 A for sizing purposes. The catch at 50 amps
50 A is 8 AWG copper by ampacity — it lands on exactly 50 A at 75 °C with nothing to spare. A continuously-operating load such as an EV charger must be sized at 125 %, or 62.5 A, which pushes the same 50 A circuit up to 6 AWG. This is why a 50 A range and a 50 A charger need different wire.
